Aquaculture Scientist
The Aquaculture Scientist will generate and review Seafood Watch
assessments to support the program's sustainable seafood recommendations
and internal expertise on top priority seafood species

- In collaboration with the Seafood Watch Aquaculture Team, refine and implement our institutional vision of sustainable aquaculture
- Assist the Seafood Watch Aquaculture Team with tracking, prioritizing and scoping of assessments
- Compile, synthesize and analyze scientific information on various aquaculture operations including peer-reviewed journal articles, industry and government reports, farm-level data, and other reviews of sustainability
- Engage in personal contacts with industry, NGO members, government personnel, and other relevant stakeholders
- Develop and review assessments using the Seafood Watch Standard for Aquaculture
- Communicate the Seafood Watch Standard for Aquaculture with all relevant stakeholders
- Analyze and develop assessments of other organizations' standards for farm-level certification of aquaculture practices for use by Seafood Watch
- Maintain ongoing expertise on key Seafood Watch priority species, and knowledge of emerging issues and innovations in aquaculture
- Work in a team environment with Monterey Bay Aquarium partner organizations and other stakeholders to shape the vision for aquaculture, and strengthen the scientific rigor of the program
- Act as a spokesperson for the Seafood Watch program on aquaculture sustainability by giving talks at meetings, and participating in relevant workshops and other outreach
- Master's degree (or near completion) in an aquaculture related field
- Strong understanding of different aquaculture systems, species, practices, and associated ecological risks
- Demonstrated understanding of emerging issues in marine conservation and aquaculture
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills
- Must be a self-starter, with strong time management and multi-tasking skills, able to work independently without much oversight
- Ability to travel domestically and globally
- Comfortable presenting to large groups on controversial subjects
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge, comfort and proficiency working in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Seafood Watch Standard for Aquaculture
